Overview
VERIFIED 18 SEP 2026Tuvalu, which was called the Ellice Islands in the past, is a country that is located in an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean. The country lies between two other countries: Hawaii and Australia. Tuvalu has a small population of 10,600, and the capital of the country is found on Funafuti Island. Some of the economic activities in Tuvalu include agricultural practices, fishing, the sale of the famous ".tv" top-level domain name of the internet, and foreign aid. Tuvalu is one of the countries that are most affected by environmental pressure due to its geographical features.
From the political standpoint, Tuvalu has a stable independent constitutional monarchy in the Commonwealth where the British Monarch is the head of state and is represented locally through the Governor-General. Tuvalu has a government led by a Prime Minister whose government consists of a single-chamber parliamentary system made up of 16 members elected every four years. Unique about the political system in Tuvalu is that it has no political parties; the parliamentarians have loose associations based on their island constituencies. Politically, Tuvalu is pro-Western with very strong bilateral relations with its neighbors, such as the Australia-Tuvalu Falepili Union treaty.
In terms of international sanctions, there are none currently imposed against the Tuvalu government by international organizations, including the UN Security Council, the US OFAC, or the EU. There are no domestically compiled sanctions lists for Tuvalu, and the government adopts the international UN Security Council sanctions lists directly. In terms of international trade compliance, it should be noted that even though the jurisdiction itself is not under any sanctions, some third-party ships flying the Tuvalu open maritime flag have been sanctioned unilaterally by programs such as OFAC in the past.
As regards financial crime, the country is not listed as a black- or grey-listed jurisdiction with strategic deficiencies on the FATF list of jurisdictions. As per compliance watchdogs such as VendorCheck, the country has a Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) rating of 40 out of 100. As a participant in the Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG), the country keeps striving to improve its baseline regimes by setting up an efficient FIU, making terrorist financing a crime, and harmonizing CDD standards for its small financial system.
